Property values in historic districts: a good investment?

WEST HIGHLAND — Do property values rise at a greater rate in historic districts than in non-designated areas? That depends on your situation and your point of view. “I bought a house in the Baker Historic District (long before it was deemed historic) and the historic designation was a blessing, not a curse,” says Maify […]

For a Good Time, View the Videos!

NORTH DENVER — We’ve noticed that the video section on our website is suffering from neglect. Not that we haven’t posted some interesting stuff there, but we haven’t told anyone.

The latest video is the USAF Band WWII Holiday Flashback; it’s a real production and just plain fun, perfect for the holidays. There’s a video about the Electorial College, regardless of your position, you’ll be armed with the knowledge that led to its place in the election of our president. Next up is Denveright, all about your involvement, asking residents to help shape a Denver of tomorrow that is even better than the Denver of today. And we have local, and I mean local, North Denver’s celebrity chef Frank Bonanno and his collaboration with DaVita Eats where he shares his expertise in the kitchen.

There is a couple more, but I’ll let you discover those on your own. If you run across something you would like to share, send us a comment. We’re always listening.

Happy Holidays from all of us at the Tribune.

Victory and Loss… good riddance to bad rubbish

Interesting article in the November 17-30 paper. I was not a Trump supporter either and only voted for him because his opponent was far worse. We also avoided an unprecedented constitutional crisis (what happens when the President-elect is indicted?).

The best thing about this election is that two political dynasties have been swept into the dustbin of history. I understand both former Bushes were supporting Hillary, and Jeb spent all of his time letting us know why he’ll never be president. Hillary did pretty much the same. Never in my lifetime has any political figure fallen so far so quickly, and never has it been more deserved. Hillary has stated that her private, unsecured server was a “mistake.” Make no mistake; she did that so her shenanigans with the Clinton Foundation would be hidden. Unfortunately, at least five foreign countries hacked this server. Our secrets are secret no more. There are still two investigations ongoing in Congress, and the FBI still has more than one hundred agents on her. President -Elect Trump may walk that back, and I’m in favor of that, with conditions.

We drop all future consideration of prosecuting the Clintons, if and only if they disappear from public life. We don’t want to hear a peep out of Hillary, Bill, or Chelsea ever again. Chelsea is being groomed for Nita Lowey’s seat in New York, but that may be tough now with her influence peddling parent’s recent hard fall.

Obama’s legacy? The destruction of the Democratic Party. Republicans now hold both houses of Congress and added members November the Eighth. Republicans now hold thirty-four governorships and the most state houses since Reconstruction. The greatest example of that is what happened in West Virginia. Note to future Democrats-don’t tell your constituents you are going to destroy their livelihoods. Obama and his politically correct brain dead drones blame this on racism of course since there are no black coal miners in West Virginia (I’m sure you’ll take that reference).

We did notice that hardly any of the downtown tantrum throwers are over the age of thirty. They come from the generation of participation trophies, where there are no winners or losers. So, when they suffer a loss, they are ill-equipped to deal with it. So we see the lady who ran over her husband when she found out he voted for Trump. People carrying “Love Trumps Hate” signs are physically assaulting Trump voters, and they are completely unaware of how that looks to sane people.

My main takeaway from November the Eight remains: Thank God it isn’t her. Trump is a New York liberal, but we won’t suffer another eight years of hate and discontent fomented by our most divisive president ever, and his hand-picked successor. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Street Seen: Scary Good

NORTH DENVER — There was witches magic in the air during the month of October. Witchy-witchcraft spells kept the brewing cauldron of normally snowy weather away,
replacing it with a balmy Indian summer like none on record. It was lovely, if not the scariest thing about this Halloween season.

But, for merchants, neighborhood friends and families it made the escapade into terror a heart-warming (and global warming) affair.

The pumpkin artistry is nothing short of spook-tacular. Two of the winning costumes, Pippy Longstocking and Beetlejuice echoed the spook with their hair-raising dos. They also hosted a series of Gallagher Ghost stories and Freaky Fright Night Flicks that had guests scintillated as Dennis Gallagher regaled the crowds with ghostly happenings in North Denver history, It appears that attendees spent the entire year concocting the elaborate costumes and makeup that put this event sponsored by Amy Berglund at the top of its class. Speaking of class, the Bryant-Webster Mariachi players put on a top-class performance that had the crowds chanting, ‘”Viva Mexico.” It was a particularly fitting song for the many beautiful Day of the Dead faces that thrilled the crowd.

North High School Trick or Treat Street Conjures Community

Speaking of community, North High School hosted a Trick or Treat Street that had seriously insane crowds, often times looking like they were let out of the asylum. Good news from North High School

NORTH DENVER — The fall semester is well underway and we have lots of good news to share from the hallowed halls of North High School. Thank you to everyone in the community who came out to support North High at the powder puff game, homecoming parade, chili and chile cook-off, bonfire and the Homecoming football game! North’s varsity football team is currently undefeated at 4-0. Come out and catch a game.

On the enrollment side, we have the largest freshman class in many years with 340 students, a 31% increase over last year. The entire student body is nearly 1,100 representing a 21% increase in the last two years.

We know that the success of a high school is demonstrated through multiple measures. While CMAS state testing is not the only measure, it is one that allows us to see how we are doing compared to other schools in Colorado.

This year, North’s English/Language Arts scores went up 9%, which was the second highest increase of all traditional high schools. We had an MGP (Median Growth Percentile) of 65, which is also the second highest of all traditional high schools and falls in the state category of “More Than Expected” growth from our students. According to Principal Scott Wolf, “East was the only school who outperformed us by one point.”

By way of comparison the Language Arts Median Growth Percentile for a mix of traditional, innovation and charter high school’s was: East-66, North-65, South-53, West Leadership-45.5, West Generations -41, and Strive Excel-37.

In Math, we gained 9.5%, which also was the second highest increase of all traditional high schools. We are especially excited that we increased the percentage of students passing the Geometry portion of the assessment by 41.8%. Our MGP in Math was 59 and again the second highest of all traditional high schools. (Thomas Jefferson led the pack at 65.)

In Math comparative MGP results show: West Leadership-62.5, Strive Excel-62, West Generations-59.5, North-59, East-55, and South-54.

Thank you for the collective investment in North. It is paying off for our students and our community! Please join us on October 27 from 6-8PM for our annual Trick or Treat Street costume party. It’s a wonderful way to connect with and support your future, neighborhood high school and our North Denver community. It is a free event.
