National, local figures call for firing of Denver Superintendent Susana Cordova

Cordova has become a national flashpoint as well. Diane Ravitch, a former Assistant Secretary of Education under President Bush entered the debate with an article published this week. Ravitch, author of multiple books on education policy, is widely regarded as a national leader of a movement to roll back reforms that include more standardized testing, schools closures and pushing charter schools, all hallmarks of the Boasberg-Bennet era.

Ravitch wrote a stinging call to arms to push Denver schools in a new direction. “It appeared that Denver was part of the new wave of pushback against failed reforms.

“High-stakes testing, written into federal law by George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind law in 2002, was embraced by Denver school officials. Almost 20 years later, we know that testing should not become the central feature of schooling. It diverts time, money and energy away from everything that is not tested, including history, civics, literature, the arts, and even recess. We now also know that the billions spent on standardized testing and Common Core were wasted, since test scores on national and international tests have barely budged in the past 20 years.”

“Merit pay was tried and failed in Denver, as it has failed everywhere else it has been tried. Teachers don’t respond to rewards and punishments; they are not donkeys.“

“Denver was praised by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos for its commitment to charter schools, but charter schools have proven to be a huge disappointment, not only  in Colorado but across the nation. They lure students and resources away from real public schools, which weakens the schools that most children attend. Privatization always and everywhere produces segregation. Multiple studies have shown that charter schools don’t get better results when the same demographic of children are enrolled.”

“The new Denver school board should use this unique opportunity to repute the failed “reforms” of the past decade. They have not closed achievement gaps; they have not improved the opportunities of all children. They have failed.

“It is time for the school board to find new leadership willing to strike out in a new direction. That means leaders who do not define schooling by deeply flawed standardized tests and who understand that a great public education system benefits all children, not just a few.”

Ravitch’s call for the firing of Cordova is rattling Denver’s education establishment.

BREAKING: An on-line petition for new leadership in DPS has launched. https://www.change.org/p/denver-public-schools-board-of-education-denver-public-schools-must-refocus-it-s-priorities

Hate the new Twitter interface?

get the deets: https://northdenvernews.com/hate-the-new-twitter-interface-heres-how-to-revert-thank-god/

Twitter recently reworked (butchered, perhaps) the interface of its website, saying the new look is “faster, easier to navigate and more personalized.”

Many, however, vehemently disagreed. People completely abhor it, calling it “atrocious,” “gouge your eyes out” bad among printable adjectives.

Salvation exists. Internet wizard Scott Bixby shared a useful do-it-yourself guide to bringing back the old, unbutchered Twitter interface with a handful of clicks.

Denver’s Teachers’ Strike – Poll shows strong support for Denver teachers as strike looms

Four of five Denver residents say they support Denver teachers in their contentious salary negotiations with Denver Public Schools, according to a new survey of about 600 randomly selected community members.
79% of respondents agree that teacher pay in Denver falls short of what it ought to be.
82% of voters say they would support teachers if the Denver Classroom Teacher Association and DPS cannot reach a new agreement this week.
62% are in favor of Denver teachers going on strike this month until they can reach agreement with the DPS Board over pay levels.
The parents of DPS students who took part in the survey demonstrated even stronger support for the teachers

Additionally, 74% of respondents held a positive view of Denver teachers, whereas only 33% reported a positive view of the DPS Board. Nearly half of the respondents want the board to take a real change of direction.

Privatization in the darkness at Denver Public Schools

While there are visible public fights going on over the search for new Superintendent for Denver schools, a more invidious effort to privatize public schools is happening is virtual darkness.
One education researcher, PhD Nancy Bailey writes:
Consider the Luminary Learning Network involved with Denver Public Schools. This is a 501 (c) (3) that partners with The Gates Family Foundation. That’s the same Gates Foundation that has employed past school board member Mary Sewell and current board member Lisa Flores. They claim it’s an Innovation School Zone run by the community schools partners and with Empower Schools—a strange pro-privatization group out of Massachusetts that claims to inform and shape policies and share learnings to help advance the Third Way.
The four Denver Luminary schools are apparently still traditional public schools, but you would never know it. They are run like separate charter or private schools, free of rules and collective bargaining. Instead of bolstering programs within the school, children and their families rely on outside organizations and businesses for instruction, like the arts.
Denver has been tied to all kinds of insidious reforms in recent years, including the Relay Graduate School of Education which is a faux Teach for America-like group designed to destroy the teaching profession.

It’s hard not to think that Board Members like Ann Rowe are not provoking fights with community members to create distractions behind the scene for privatization that she, Flores and Barbara O’Brien champion.
