Su Teatro presents Joaquin’s Christmas

Holidays are always special at Su Teatro and this year will be no exception. Joaquin’s Christmas, an old favorite, returns to the stage. This family classic is set in Pueblo, Colorado in 1955 and features 7-year-old Joaquin, enduring tough times with his Papa out on strike against evil Mr. Van Rich-n-Wealthy. Can a cigar-smoking, talking dog named Angel and a magical Abuela (Grandmother) make this a very Merry Christmas?

Joaquin’s Christmas first performed in 1975

Written and directed by Anthony J. Garcia, Joaquin’s Christmas was conceived after a request from a pastor/director from the Denver Inner City Parish for a children’s Christmas play. Garcia’s understanding of the community and his own childhood, were the inspirations for a play that bucked the traditional and commercialized version of the holiday season. Complete with a magical grandmother, talking dog, evil influences, and a loving mom and dad, Joaquin’s Christmas is the perfect anecdote to the commercialization that families face. What matters, in the end, is the family and friends that love you.

Joaquin’s Christmas began as a agit-prop theatrical production that was written to show the difficulties experienced by working-class families trying to make ends meet during the holidays while rich corporations and their owners feasted on food and drink. Two mimes told the story using a hand-made story-board. The play became an annual event with all the characters coming to life on stage. Music and special effects were added to create a heartwarming, funny, and irreverent holiday production. Joaquin’s Christmas, is the kind of holiday outing for the family that will provide plenty of opportunity to talk about the true meaning of Christmas and the holidays.
