Most Americans are concerned with maintaining law and order, with some interesting results by party and race. Neither presidential candidate has a clear edge on this issue, but the incumbent gets negative marks for his handling of the recent protests that have been sparked by the death of George Floyd and others over the past few months. The Monmouth University Poll finds that few Americans feel that the suburbs are under significant threat from undesirable consequences of greater integration. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans say that maintaining law and order is a major problem in the country right now. Another 25% say it is a minor problem and 8% say it is not a problem. There are some interesting variations by party combined with race*. Republicans and independents who lean toward the Republican Party (77%) are the most likely to say this is a major problem. Only 46% of white non-Republicans agree. However, non-Republicans who are Black (60%) or of another race or ethnicity (66%) are more likely than white non-Republicans to feel this way. “It appears we are looking at a divergence between politics and experience. Among white Americans, partisanship creates a clear dividing line on whether law and order is a problem. But for people of color, partisan identity does not seem to be driving their opinion on this issue,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. Neither presidential candidate has a decisive advantage in public trust on this issue. Slightly over half (52%) are very or somewhat confident that Joe Biden can maintain law and order if he is elected president, while slightly under half (48%) say the same about Donald Trump if he is reelected. “It’s not clear whether Trump’s law and order message has moved the needle at all because we don’t have trends on this question. But there is some potential for softening Latino support for Biden, for example, given the racial differences in opinion among non-Republicans,” said Murray. One in four (24%) Americans feel the actions taken during recent protests about police involvement in the deaths of Black civilians were fully justified. This is down from 30% who said the same in late June, but still higher than 17% in Monmouth’s early June poll. Another 40% say the protestors actions’ were partially justified (35% in late June and 37% in early June) and 31% say they were not at all justified (29% in late June and 38% in early June). The poll also finds a drop in the number of Americans who say that the anger driving these protests, regardless of the actual actions, is fully justified. Currently, 39% say this anger is fully justified, compared to 46% in late June and 57% in early June. Another 34% say this anger is partially justified (up from 28% in late June and 21% in early June) and 24% say it is not at all justified (compared to 23% in late June and 18% in early June). Republicans and GOP-leaners are much less likely to say that the underlying anger is fully justified than they were at the start of the protests (15% now, compared to 18% in late June and 40% in early June). However, this opinion has also declined among Black non-Republicans (58% now, 68% late June, 74% early June). There are smaller shifts among non-Republicans who are white (65% now compared with 71% in both prior polls) or from other racial groups (54% now, 60% late June, 65% early June). “Black Americans continue to be supportive of the protests, but there seems to be a softening of that opinion as violence spills from downtown areas into local neighborhoods,” said Murray. Most Americans (61%) say that Trump’s handling of the protests has mad…

Colorado gas demand plummets, prices at the pump to follow

Gasoline demand has dropped to its lowest level since June, per a AAA analysis of the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report that found total demand measures 8.3 million barrels per day. As demand dropped for a second week, so too did gasoline supply levels – down nearly 3 million barrels to 231 million barrels. Still, supplies sit at a 3 million barrel year-over-year surplus as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. “In a typical year, lower supply levels translate into higher pump prices. Despite consistent declines in gasoline stocks, though, that’s just not happening right now,” said Skyler McKinley, director of public affairs for AAA Colorado. “Even amid a steady supply dip, the sustained decrease in demand helped push national gas prices cheaper on the week.” Today’s national gas price average sits at $2.19, down three cents from last week, two cents from a month ago, and 37 cents cheaper than this time last year. On the week, every single state saw gas prices decrease or stabilize at the pump. Colorado’s statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.33, down from $2.35 a week ago, $2.40 a month ago, and $2.60 a year ago. Gasoline Blend Switchover Mid-September usually ushers in cheaper gas prices, as gas stations switch from summer-blend gasoline to winter-blend, which costs less to produce. The difference between the two blends comes down to Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP), which is a measure of how easily the fuel evaporates at a given temperature. The higher – or more volatile – the RVP, the more able it is to evaporate at low temperatures. Winter-blend has a higher RVP, which allows the fuel to evaporate at low temperatures for the engine to operate properly, especially when engines are cold. If the RVP is too low on a frigid day, the vehicle will be hard to start and, once started, will run rough. “Motorists will see some savings at the pump as we switch to winter-blend, but the price difference will be smaller than is typical, given how cheap prices have been this year already,” McKinley said. “It’s also worth monitoring the hurricane outlook, which can meaningfully change any forecast for savings, region by region.” Hurricane Outlook The National Hurricane Center is currently tracking a number of tropical storms and depressions. Hurricane Sally, upgraded earlier today from Tropical Storm status, is expected to produce life-threatening storm surge and intense winds as it continues to strengthen near the northern Gulf Coast. Sally has already forced at least one refinery shutdown in Louisiana, at Phillips 66. Others are monitoring the storm to determine their next operational decisions. Most pump price impacts will be contained to the affected region, however, and a national impact is unlikely. Oil Market Dynamics At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI increased by three cents to settle at $37.33, marking a weekly loss of $2.44. Domestic crude prices decreased after EIA’s weekly report revealed that total domestic crude inventories increased by 2 million barrels, increasing total stocks to 500.4 million barrels. Increasing stocks could signal that crude demand is in decline. Production, meanwhile, increased by 300,000 barrels per day last week to 10 million barrels per day. Crude prices will likely decrease further amid growing demand concerns. Hurricane Sally has led some offshore platforms in the Gulf Coast to shutter production. Chevron shut and evacuated its Blind Faith and Petronius platforms, while Royal Dutch Shell said it may begin closing some of its offshore drilling operations on Sunday. Murphy Oil shut the Delta House platform because it is i…

Young adults with high blood pressure or obesity at serious risk with COVID19

New from 10.1001/jamainternmed.2020.5415 New evidence suggests that obesity and high blood pressure are severe risk factors for critical cases of COVID19, even with young adults. “Older age has consistently been associated with higher mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). 1 ,2 Unfortunately, as shown by Cunningham et al 3 in this issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, COVID-19 does not spare young people. Using a national all-payer hospital database, the investigators identified 3222 nonpregnant adults aged 18 to 34 years who were admitted to US hospitals for COVID-19. Morbidity was substantial: 21% required intensive care, and 2.7% died. Mortality was higher among those who had obesity, hypertension, and male sex, as has been noted in general adult populations. “Combined with what we know about the greater risk of older persons, what does this study tell us about COVID-19 and young adults? First, while young adults are much less likely than older persons to become seriously ill, if they reach the point of hospitalization, their risks are substantial. Second, obesity, hypertension, and male sex put patients of all ages at greater risk. As obesity and hypertension are preventable and treatable conditions, reducing the risk of serious COVID 19 illness should be added to the already long list of reasons to increase medical and public health efforts in young adults to promote healthful diets and increased exercise. Finally, the article by Cunningham et al 3 establishes that COVID-19 is a life-threatening disease in people of all ages and that social distancing, facial coverings, and other approaches to prevent transmission are as important in young adults as in older persons.” Three percent of adults, ages 18-34, who were hospitalized with COVID-19 died, but 21% required intensive care and 10% required mechanical ventilation, reported Scott Solomon, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and colleagues. “While young adults are much less likely than older persons to become seriously ill, if they reach the point of hospitalization, their risks are substantial,” wrote Katz, who is also the deputy editor of JAMA Internal Medicine. Katz advocated for public health efforts to promote healthier eating and the importance of exercise in young people, and noted that young people should be adhering to public health interventions, such as face masks in public and social distancing, as much as older adults. Emergency Physicians Urge Recognition of Warning Signs of Suicide and Know How to Help

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Week, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) urges everyone to do their part to support those who may be struggling with depression or other mental health challenges by recognizing the warning signs of suicide, knowing how to help, and becoming more familiar with resources available in each community. “Spotting suicidal thoughts or behaviors could help avoid a tragedy,” said William Jaquis, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “Each of us will process this pandemic in our own way, but people may be more likely to experience difficult feelings during a crisis. You can be sure that if and when you need us, an emergency physician will be there for you.” Call 911 or visit the closest emergency department in the event of a medical emergency or if there is an immediate health or safety threat. Contact a mental health professional if you, or someone you know, exhibits one or more of these warning signs: Hopelessness Rage, uncontrolled anger, seeking revenge Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities Increased alcohol or drug use Withdrawal from friends, family, or society Anxiety, agitation, trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time Dramatic mood changes Consider contacting a health professional if stress impedes your daily activities for several days in a row. Talk to the person to understand what they are thinking and feeling. Research shows that discussing suicide may reduce suicidal thoughts. Help a person at-risk by connecting them with trusted friends or family, or a mental health professional. If emergency care is required for a suicide attempt, a physician-led care team will keep the patient safe until they are ready to go home. Prior to discharge, resources for longer-term care will be outlined as appropriate and a list of nearby experts and places to go for help will be provided as available. The care team will work with the patient to create a written safety plan that includes their unique warning signs, coping strategies, and resources for help. It is critical that patients try to maintain a safe environment for themselves at home. More than half (52 percent) of suicides involve a gun, according to research available through AFFIRM, an emergency-physician-led organization dedicated to firearm injury prevention research. Misuse of medication also poses significant risks. Ask a doctor about how to of unused, expired or unwanted medicines. Consider taking steps to identify the best strategies for safe storage of medication, firearms or other potential home hazards. One helpful tool that encourages safe storage based on personal choices is Lock2Live, an education website developed by emergency physicians. “Suicide is complicated, and emergency physicians are vital partners in the collaborative effort necessary to prevent these incidents from occurring. If you ever feel like you may hurt yourself or others or you have thoughts about taking your own life, please seek help right away,” said Dr. Jaquis. If you or somebody you know experiences suicidal thoughts or behaviors, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is available to anyone and all calls are confidential. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers additional resources for help here. Governor Jared Polis provided an update on the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic today. Gov. Polis was joined by Sarah Tuneberg, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and Brittany Bowlen, Denver Broncos to announce that the Broncos will have limited capacity starting on Sept. 27 when the Broncos square off against Tampa Bay. “Colorado is Broncos Country and I know that everyone, including my family, has been eager to get back to football Sundays and I am thrilled to announce today that for the Denver Broncos’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 27, we will be allowing a limited number of fans to attend,” said Gov. Polis. “We are able to take this step due to Coloradans doing our part in wearing masks and avoiding large groups and the commitment and dedication of the Broncos to go above and beyond in putting together an experience for fans that is as safe as possible. As I’ve been saying all along, this virus isn’t going away any time soon and we’ve got to figure out a way to live with this virus.” Capacity at the stadium will initially be limited to about 7.5% of the stadium capacity or approximately 5,700 fans. Due to its very large size, the stadium is set up as a series of outdoor events, all following the state’s outdoor event guidance. The state and the Broncos organization will continue working together to ensure the safety of fans and players is protected and they will together re-evaluate increasing fan attendance for future home games. Every fan entering the stadium will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing like they would in any other public place. Any fan who does not comply with mask-wearing guidelines or social distancing requirements will be required to leave the stadium. Tailgating is not permitted in parking lots and congregating in parking lots, concourses or the stadium bowl is prohibited. The franchise will assign entry gates based on seat location and Broncos fans are asked to provide additional time in order to abide by social distancing requirements during the security process. Fans should stay home if they are sick, showing any COVID-19 symptoms or if they have come in close contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19. Please visit one of the state’s free, quick and easy community testing sites to get tested for COVID-19. The organization has set up safety enhancements at Empower Field at Mile High, staff will go through a health screening and temperature check, are required to wear PPE at all times, and Broncos staff will have gone through COVID-19 safety training.  The Broncos have received this approval from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, per the public health order requiring professional sports to get any plans for spectators approved by the state. Other venues interested in taking a similar approach must apply for a variance in conjunction with their local health department. Gov. Polis was joined by Sarah Tuneberg, Senior COVID-19 Advisory, and Innovation Response Team Leader, to announce a new partnership between the state of Colorado and Google and Apple that will leverage cutting-edge technology to help us slow the spread of COVID-19. It’s called Exposure Notification services that all Coloradans can opt-in to on their phone later this month. This mobile phone service will allow people to know if they might have been exposed to COVID without compromising their privacy or data. This is entirely optional. Privacy and security are at the core of the design of the service. The service will be offered to both iOs and Android users in Colorado. If someone opts-in, they can be no…
