Boulder’s cannabis biz Terrapin Supports Live Music Venues Through COVID-19 Pandemic

Terrapin, a Boulder-based national cannabis company, announced today that it has contributed $30,000 to preserving the city’s institutional music venues and history through the pandemic. As the global coronavirus pandemic rages on, live music venues, including the Boulder Theater and Fox Theatre, have been hit hard economically. Venues were some of the first businesses to shutter their doors when the pandemic began, and it is likely that venues will be one of the last businesses to reopen due to social distancing requirements. Terrapin, which draws part of its corporate philosophy from that of the shared music experience, has long supported Colorado’s arts and music scene since its founding in 2009. “As an ‘essential’ business allowed to stay open during the pandemic, we have a duty to step up for those in the community struggling due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID,” said Chris Woods, owner and CEO of Terrapin. “The nexus between cannabis and the arts goes back as long as our history with cannabis and music. The Boulder and Fox theaters are institutions right in our backyard whose endless contributions to the live music scene have shaped our community for decades. It would be devastating to see these venues shutter permanently, so we are following through with our commitment to lift our community up during this uncertain time.” For several years, Terrapin has maintained relationships with the Colorado Music Experience (CoME) and Z2 Entertainment. Z2 owns and operates both the Fox and Boulder theaters and CoME is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Colorado’s legendary music history. As venues throughout the community began to cease operations, Terrapin felt a duty to step up its support for these organizations. We first hired former Fox and Boulder venue employees to assist us with additional security needs throughout Terrapin’s Colorado operations. Terrapin’s recent $30,000 commitment is the second step the company is taking to support the local concert and venues scene. “Terrapin’s leadership and staff have always, and even more so during the pandemic, worked to support and lift up the live music ecosystem through their generous contributions to our business and our team,” said Z2 CEO Cheryl Liguori. Prior to the pandemic, Terrapin had booths and sponsored many events at the Boulder and Fox theaters. Over the years, the Terrapin and Z2 teams built a bond and worked to support each other’s endeavors. In May, when it became clear that COVID-19 would be affecting the Colorado music community for the foreseeable future, Terrapin brought on a dozen former Fox and Boulder theater employees who had been laid off. One former Z2 employee, Hannah Slape, said of the experience, “When we first heard that Terrapin and Z2 were working together to keep our guys employed, it was just awesome news. They’re really trying to help us out, and it’s a win-win because of the close relationship between Terrapin and Z2. Working for Terrapin has really been a lifeline for me.” The Colorado Music Experience, founded by one of Colorado’s most well-known music journalists, G. Brown, is a nonprofit organization established to preserve and curate one-of-a-kind Colorado music memories and experiences. As the recipient of Terrapin’s $30,000 contribution, CoME distributed $25,000 to Z2 for relief for the Fox and Boulder theaters. The additional $5,000 serves as funding for CoME’s work preserving Colorado’s unique music history. “Now and forever, the power of live music lifts the human spirit,” Brown said. “Iconic venues such as the Fox Theatre and Boulder…

4 Reasons You Should Waterproof Your Basement

When people think about home improvements, they don’t often consider the basement. When people think about home improvements, they don’t often consider the basement. It’s a room that is often unseen, and usually used to store old Halloween costumes and broken items of furniture that you don’t have a place for in the rest of the house! However, paying some attention to your basement can result in some real benefits. Reduces The Risk Of Flooding As we saw last year, Denver isn’t immune to flooding, and if you want to make sure that your home is safe the next time there’s a series of heavy storms, then waterproofing your basement is a great way to do it. Waterproofing essentially involves building a system so that excess water will drain off safely, rather than entering your home. If you want to ensure that your waterproofing is as effective as possible, it’s worth consulting a trusted professional who knows your local area. For example, Helitech is good at basement waterproofing in Columbia because they have relationships with a lot of different businesses in the local area and therefore a lot of experience about the benefits and pitfalls of different waterproofing methods for different property types. Gives You An Extra Room A huge benefit of waterproofing your basement is that it turns it into an extra room that you can use! A basement room has a multitude of possible uses. As it’s a room that is quite hidden away, it’s perfect for creating a cozy feel, or for feeling as though you have a little privacy from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. Some thoughts for your room are: Wine cellar Speakeasy style bar Cozy snug living room Playroom Home theater Games room Music room Art studio Gym Library Home office Even if you do continue to use it for storage, keeping moisture away from your possessions is always a good idea. Reduces Moisture Levels In Your Home Water tends to travel upwards as it evaporates, so if your basement is damp then that moisture is going to get into the rest of your home.  This can cause your home to feel humid in the warm weather, and can also cause increased levels of rust and oxidation on metal surfaces. Plus it creates an environment where mold thrives, and an all-round unpleasant atmosphere. If you have any problems with damp at all, waterproofing your basement is definitely the right place to start. Protects Your Home By waterproofing your home you are preventing water from entering it, and not just during floods. Even rain can enter your home eventually if your basement isn’t properly waterproofed. This can damage the outside of your house as your foundations may shift, causing leaks and cracks to appear. If water is entering your home unnoticed this can cause damage to your property and your possessions. A leak can cause wooden floorboards to warp and walls to rot, both of which are problems that can be expensive and time-consuming to remedy.  Photo by mrwynd Benefits Archiv Archive Atmosphere Begins Businesses Bustle Cause Damage Cellar Cellar Wine Benefits Archiv Archive

A major breakthrough in COVID treatment harnesses tiny antibody molecule

For the doctors fighting COVID19, its been a long road without much in the medical armamentarium, whether in the way of effective treatment or vaccines. But basic science continues to labor long and hard, and the payoffs are in the offing.  University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists have isolated the smallest biological molecule to date that completely and specifically neutralizes the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the cause of COVID-19. This antibody component, which is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, has been used to construct a drug—known as Ab8—for potential use as a therapeutic and prophylactic against SARS-CoV-2….READ MORE: https://northdenvernews.com/a-major-breakthrough-in-covid-treatment-harnesses-tiny-antibody-molecule/

This antibody component, which is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, has been used to construct a drug—known as Ab8—for potential use as a therapeutic and prophylactic against SARS-CoV-2. The researchers report today in the journal Cell  ( https :// www . cell . com / cell / fulltext / S0092 – 8674 ( 20 ) 31148 – X ) that Ab8 is highly effective in preventing and treating SARS-CoV-2 infection in mice and hamsters. Its tiny size not only increases its potential for diffusion in tissues to better neutralize the virus, but also makes it possible to administer the drug by alternative routes, including inhalation. Importantly, it does not bind to human cells—a good sign that it won’t have negative side-effects in people. Canucks and Yankees have teamed to together to test the potential drug. Ab8 was evaluated in conjunction with scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, as well as the University of British Columbia and University of Saskatchewan. “Ab8 not only has potential as therapy for COVID-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections,” said co-author John Mellors, M.D., chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UPMC and Pitt. “Antibodies of larger size have worked against other infectious diseases and have been well tolerated, giving us hope that it could be an effective treatment for patients with COVID-19 and for protection of those who have never had the infection and are not immune.” The tiny antibody component is the variable, heavy chain (VH) domain of an immunoglobulin, a blood-borne anti-body. Identified by “mining” a motherlode of more than 100 billion potential candidates using the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein as a diving rod. Ab8 is created when the VH domain is fused to part of the immunoglobulin rear region, adding the immune functions of a full-size antibody without the molecular bulk. Like the Pitt and UPMC vaccine candidate PittCoVacc that delivers an immunization through a spiky Band-Aid-like patch and overcomes the need for needles and refrigeration, the researchers are “thinking outside the box” when it comes to how Ab8 could be administered. Its small size might allow it to be given as an inhaled drug or intradermally, rather than intravenously through an IV drip, like most monoclonal antibodies currently in development. Abound Bio, a newly formed UPMC-backed company, has licensed Ab8 for worldwide development. Dimiter Dimitrov, Ph.D., senior author of the Cell publication and director of Pitt’s Center for Antibody Therapeutics, was one of the first to discover neutralizing antibodies for the original SARS coronavirus in 2003. In the ensuing years, his team discovered potent antibodies against many other infectious diseases, including those caused by MERS-CoV, dengue, Hendra and Nipah viruses. The antibody against Hendra and Nipah viruses has been evaluated in humans and approved for clinical use on a compassionate basis in Australia. Clinical trials are testing convalescent plasma—which contains antibodies from people who already had COVID-19—as a treatment for tho…

When it comes time to have the conversation with your aging parent, grandparent, or other loved one about transitioning into the next phase of life, you might be met with some emotion and a lot of questions. It is no doubt going to be a difficult time as your loved one will feel as though they are in a situation where they are giving up their independence. However difficult the conversation might be, if it is no longer safe or realistic for your loved one to live alone, then new options must be explored. One thing that can help ease this transition a great deal is finding the perfect assisted living facility that will make them feel right at home. There are most likely going to be several options to choose from, but it is important that you take the right steps to find the most ideal living situation for your loved one. If you are beginning the process of searching for an assisted living facility for someone close to you, there are a few things you should consider in order to ensure that you select the place that will feel like home. Here are a few tips to help you find the right assisted living facility for your loved one. Decide on the Type of Facility You Need If this is your first time really looking into the topic of assisted living facilities, you might be surprised to find that such facilities are not all the same in terms of what they offer. While the standard of care for the aging must meet certain criteria, different facilities are categorized differently based on just how much care they offer. Some are designed to offer as much independence as possible while others are more hands-on and have different types of medical staff on board at all times. Many facilities, like Brandywine Living, offer services specifically designed to help residents living with Alzheimer’s. While they also have residents not suffering from this condition, they have trained and qualified staff on hand to administer memory care to those who might be in a situation that necessitates it. Ultimately, if your loved one is in need of specific types of care, you should begin your search for the right assisted living home by only looking into ones that offer the services they will need in order to live as comfortably and happily as possible. Non-Medical Services While the most important thing to consider when searching for the right assisted living facility is the type of medical care that is offered, there are several other significant points to look for as well. Essentially, you don’t want your loved one to feel as though they are being cooped up all day with nothing to do. Most assisted living facilities offer activities and other things to do throughout the week, but you want to ensure that the one you choose offers both the type and the amount of activities that your loved one will appreciate. In other words, if your loved one is accustomed to socializing and being moderately active throughout the day, look for a facility that has a busy schedule filled with things that seniors enjoy doing. If, on the other hand, your loved one prefers to socialize a bit on their own terms, a facility that isn’t overloaded with activities might be more up their alley. It is important in your search to keep your loved one’s opinion in the loop. It is, after all, going to be their home. Keep them part of the greater conversation and ask them what sorts of things they see themselves doing throughout the week. The more involved you can make them in this part of the process, the better the chances will be of facilitating a smoother transition. Food and Nutrition A major part of daily life for anyone is the food that they will eat. For this reason, it is important to get nutritional and dietary information from all of the fa…

Are you thinking about buying a luxury car? This is a major decision to make as it is a lot of money, so it is one which you always need to take your time with. Still, there are many benefits to luxury car ownership, including a few obvious ones along with a few not so obvious perks. Being aware of what these advantages are could help to persuade you and justify the purchase, so if you are currently on the fence then read on for a few of the main benefits that you get when you drive a luxury car. 1. Owner Satisfaction The most obvious benefit is that you get great owner satisfaction. It is hard to get excited about a typical car that you have for practical reasons, but a luxury car is sure to be your prized possession and one which brings a smile to your face whenever you get behind the wheel. 2. Status Symbol Similarly, a luxury car is a status symbol, and you are sure to turn heads wherever you go with an exotic automobile. It is sure to impress friends, family and colleague and could improve your social standing, which of course has many benefits and could change your life in a few different ways. 3. Better Driving Experience You will also benefit from a far greater experience behind the wheel with a luxury car. These automobiles are usually faster, more powerful, have smoother steering and more comfortable interiors which can make a big difference to how you feel behind the wheel, particularly those that drive often. Not only this, but you can often benefit from the best and latest safety features and tech with a new luxury car. 4. Valuable Asset While it is a high cost to cover, you must also keep in mind that when you are the owner of a luxury car, you will also be the owner of a highly valuable asset. This means that you could sell your Porsche or any other type of luxury car at any time and significantly improve your financial situation. When you do decide to sell, you should always sell to those that specialize in buying luxury cars to make the process as quick and easy as possible. 5. Build Quality Luxury cars are also built to last unlike your average automobiles, so even an old luxury car should still perform to a high standard. This is beneficial because it makes the car a great investment and one which will last you if you wish. However, it is still important to carry out regular car maintenance, much like any other automobile to keep the car in tip-top condition at all times. These are just a few of the main benefits of luxury car ownership, but there are many more to consider. Owning a luxury can change your life in many ways and greatly improve your motoring experience – while they are certainly not cheap, many motorists find them to be a good investment and enjoy the many perks of ownership. Most Americans are concerned with maintaining law and order, with some interesting results by party and race. Neither presidential candidate has a clear edge on this issue, but the incumbent gets negative marks for his handling of the recent protests that have been sparked by the death of George Floyd and others over the past few months. The Monmouth University Poll finds that few Americans feel that the suburbs are under significant threat from undesirable consequences of greater integration. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans say that maintaining law and order is a major problem in the country right now. Another 25% say it is a minor problem and 8% say it is not a problem. There are some interesting variations by party combined with race*. Republicans and independents who lean toward the Republican Party (77%) are the most likely to say this is a major problem. Only 46% of white non-Republicans agree. However, non-Republicans who are Black (60%) or of another race or ethnicity (66%) are more likely than white non-Republicans to feel this way. “It appears we are looking at a divergence between politics and experience. Among white Americans, partisanship creates a clear dividing line on whether law and order is a problem. But for people of color, partisan identity does not seem to be driving their opinion on this issue,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. Neither presidential candidate has a decisive advantage in public trust on this issue. Slightly over half (52%) are very or somewhat confident that Joe Biden can maintain law and order if he is elected president, while slightly under half (48%) say the same about Donald Trump if he is reelected. “It’s not clear whether Trump’s law and order message has moved the needle at all because we don’t have trends on this question. But there is some potential for softening Latino support for Biden, for example, given the racial differences in opinion among non-Republicans,” said Murray. One in four (24%) Americans feel the actions taken during recent protests about police involvement in the deaths of Black civilians were fully justified. This is down from 30% who said the same in late June, but still higher than 17% in Monmouth’s early June poll. Another 40% say the protestors actions’ were partially justified (35% in late June and 37% in early June) and 31% say they were not at all justified (29% in late June and 38% in early June). The poll also finds a drop in the number of Americans who say that the anger driving these protests, regardless of the actual actions, is fully justified. Currently, 39% say this anger is fully justified, compared to 46% in late June and 57% in early June. Another 34% say this anger is partially justified (up from 28% in late June and 21% in early June) and 24% say it is not at all justified (compared to 23% in late June and 18% in early June). Republicans and GOP-leaners are much less likely to say that the underlying anger is fully justified than they were at the start of the protests (15% now, compared to 18% in late June and 40% in early June). However, this opinion has also declined among Black non-Republicans (58% now, 68% late June, 74% early June). There are smaller shifts among non-Republicans who are white (65% now compared with 71% in both prior polls) or from other racial groups (54% now, 60% late June, 65% early June). “Black Americans continue to be supportive of the protests, but there seems to be a softening of that opinion as violence spills from downtown areas into local neighborhoods,” said Murray. Most Americans (61%) say that Trump’s handling of the protests has mad…

Gasoline demand has dropped to its lowest level since June, per a AAA analysis of the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report that found total demand measures 8.3 million barrels per day. As demand dropped for a second week, so too did gasoline supply levels – down nearly 3 million barrels to 231 million barrels. Still, supplies sit at a 3 million barrel year-over-year surplus as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. “In a typical year, lower supply levels translate into higher pump prices. Despite consistent declines in gasoline stocks, though, that’s just not happening right now,” said Skyler McKinley, director of public affairs for AAA Colorado. “Even amid a steady supply dip, the sustained decrease in demand helped push national gas prices cheaper on the week.” Today’s national gas price average sits at $2.19, down three cents from last week, two cents from a month ago, and 37 cents cheaper than this time last year. On the week, every single state saw gas prices decrease or stabilize at the pump. Colorado’s statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.33, down from $2.35 a week ago, $2.40 a month ago, and $2.60 a year ago. Gasoline Blend Switchover Mid-September usually ushers in cheaper gas prices, as gas stations switch from summer-blend gasoline to winter-blend, which costs less to produce. The difference between the two blends comes down to Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP), which is a measure of how easily the fuel evaporates at a given temperature. The higher – or more volatile – the RVP, the more able it is to evaporate at low temperatures. Winter-blend has a higher RVP, which allows the fuel to evaporate at low temperatures for the engine to operate properly, especially when engines are cold. If the RVP is too low on a frigid day, the vehicle will be hard to start and, once started, will run rough. “Motorists will see some savings at the pump as we switch to winter-blend, but the price difference will be smaller than is typical, given how cheap prices have been this year already,” McKinley said. “It’s also worth monitoring the hurricane outlook, which can meaningfully change any forecast for savings, region by region.” Hurricane Outlook The National Hurricane Center is currently tracking a number of tropical storms and depressions. Hurricane Sally, upgraded earlier today from Tropical Storm status, is expected to produce life-threatening storm surge and intense winds as it continues to strengthen near the northern Gulf Coast. Sally has already forced at least one refinery shutdown in Louisiana, at Phillips 66. Others are monitoring the storm to determine their next operational decisions. Most pump price impacts will be contained to the affected region, however, and a national impact is unlikely. Oil Market Dynamics At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI increased by three cents to settle at $37.33, marking a weekly loss of $2.44. Domestic crude prices decreased after EIA’s weekly report revealed that total domestic crude inventories increased by 2 million barrels, increasing total stocks to 500.4 million barrels. Increasing stocks could signal that crude demand is in decline. Production, meanwhile, increased by 300,000 barrels per day last week to 10 million barrels per day. Crude prices will likely decrease further amid growing demand concerns. Hurricane Sally has led some offshore platforms in the Gulf Coast to shutter production. Chevron shut and evacuated its Blind Faith and Petronius platforms, while Royal Dutch Shell said it may begin closing some of its offshore drilling operations on Sunday. Murphy Oil shut the Delta House platform because it is i…
